Grottaferrata is one of the Castelli Romani, the hill towns of the Alban Hills south-east of Rome, known for its thousand-year-old Greek abbey. Its state science high school carries the name of Bruno Touschek, the physicist who built AdA, the first electron-positron collider, at the nearby Frascati laboratories.

Also, a school roof must go back into service quickly, ideally inside a holiday break. Public buildings in Europe are now expected to use low-impact materials as well. Finally, the roof sits fully exposed to the strong sun and heavy rain of central Italy.

Why Impermax 2K for this school roof?
Impermax 2K is a two-component polyurethane made with renewable raw materials of vegetable origin. It is hot-sprayed and solvent-free, with no joints or overlaps. It bridges small cracks in the support and is ready for service in a few hours, so the school loses very little time.

How is the Impermax 2K roof system applied, step by step?
The system goes on in three layers. The sequence is as follows.
- Prepare the support. The surface is sandblasted or diamond-sanded to open the pores, then all dust is vacuumed.
- Check the support. It must be level, clean and dry, with a pull-off strength of at least 1.5 N/mm². Any cracks are repaired first.
- Apply the first coat. Impermax 2K M goes on as the adhesion coat. It also works as a primer on asphalt, steel and flexible membranes, which helps on mixed roof details.
- Check the weather. Air should be between 10 °C and 40 °C, with humidity below 85%. Wind over 25 km/h disturbs the spray.
- Hot-spray the membrane. Impermax 2K runs at 60 °C (A), 70 °C (B) and at least 140 bar. As a rule, 1.8–2.0 kg/m² builds at least 1.9 mm.
- Seal with Colodur. Finally, grey Colodur goes on by roller, brush or airless spray, as a rule at 200–500 g/m².
After that, the Impermax 2K membrane resists rain drops after 15 minutes, at 25 °C and 50% humidity. It takes light foot traffic after 1 hour and reaches 90% of its final properties after 2 days. The Colodur topcoat is walkable after 24 to 48 hours. In practice, the whole roof can be done inside a short school break.
